INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Ouachita Wrestling scored 24 points and finishes tied for 27 behind
Tyler Mann's 16 points in the 40th annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
Tyler Mann (16-4) was almost unstoppable through the 157 weight class bracket. He started out the tournament with an 11-7 decision over Tucker Black (Upper Iowa) and a 5-2 decision over Walker Carr (Northern State). He entered the Quarterfinals with momentum and defeated James Wimer (Findlay) with a 8-5 decision. Mann was not done with his winning ways, looking to reach the Midwest Classic Finals for the first time. He faced off against Nick Boggs (Lake Eire College) and took him down with a 6-2 decision. In the Finals Mann squared up against Tyler Mies of Newman where Mann succumbed to Mies on a 7-1 decision.
Augustus Boyd (13-6) also had a great showing at the classic. After dropping the first match, Boyd showed his determination and grit by defeating Jody Crouse (Seton Hill) with a fall at the 6:06 mark. He continued riding the wave of winning by capturing a 12-5 decision over Mitchell Kotschevar (Minnesota State Moorhead). In the third round of the Consolidation bracket Boyd faced off against Diego Gallegos (Northern State) and won on a 3-1 decision. He ended his weekend with a heart-breaking loss to Clayton Wahlstrom (Augustana (SD)) on a 8-6 decision.
Tanner Hawkins (12-10) picked up two wins this weekend and made it to the third round of the 285 weight class consolidation bracket. He earned a 3-2 decision over Rulon Taylor (Chadron State) and also clinched a sudden victory against Samuel Erckenbrack (Minnesota State Moorhead). A sudden victory overtime occurs in tournaments when two players are tied after three rounds. In this one minute overtime the first player to score a point is the winner.
Justin Villegas (6-10) and Jace Browlee (9-10) both successfully won a match over the weekend.
Logan Sloss (5-5) ,
Michael Billups (4-7), and
Jordan Dieringer (5-5) all fought hard in their respective weight classes.
The Tiger Wrestlers get to enjoy the Christmas break before returning to action against the University of Central Oklahoma on January 9.
