Savage Storm Edge Out Lady Tigers

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Lady Tigers lost another close game on Saturday afternoon, this time it was a 68-66 defeat to Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Ouachita (12-11, 8-9 GAC) have now lost seven consecutive games to Southeastern (10-12, 8-9). The Lady Tigers last win against the Savage Storm came on January 17, 2015.

Ouachita got off to a slow start offensively, only scoring 9 total points in the opening quarter of play. The offense started to click a little bit more in the second quarter as the Lady Tigers outscored the Savage Storm 15-8.

Both offenses picked up the tempo in the second half as each team averaged over 20 points a quarter the rest of the game.

With 8:16 remaining in the third quarter Chasidee Owens (Springdale, Ark.) drove the ball into the lane to give the Lady Tigers a one-point advantage. Moments later Owens hit a three-pointer to give Ouachita a four-point lead.

Morgan Miller (Siloam Springs, Ark.) and Maija Gertson (Liepaja, Latvia) both contributed three-pointers in the quarter to help keep the Lady Tigers on top. The Savage Storm went on a quick run to take the lead back with 2:52 in the third quarter.

Shakyla Begnaud (McGehee, Ark.) and Owens each hit jumpers in the paint to keep the Lady Tigers within a single point heading into the final quarter of play.

The two teams went back-and-forth for the majority of the fourth quarter. Each team holding the lead and having chances to put the game away.

Southeastern lead 51-50 with 6:24 remaining in the game. Katie Branam sank a three-point basket that sparked an 11-2 run. The Lady Tigers attempted to counter with a quick 5-0 run of their own, but it was too late as Southeastern held on for the victory.

Defensively the Lady Tigers shutdown the Savage Storm, only allowing them to shoot 38.9 percent from the field in the game.

Owens and Madison Brittain (Bentonville, Ark.) were the only Lady Tigers in double-figure scoring. Owens finished with 18 points in the game, while Brittain added 16.

The Savage Storm had three players score in double figures with Alix Robinson leading the way with 18 points. Emem David and Sa'Liesha Hunter each had 10 points in the win.

Ouachita will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday evening against Harding University. It will be the third consecutive home game for the Lady Tigers at Bill Vining arena. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
