Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – Mahlon Martin (Little Rock, Ark.) grabbed a pass from a fellow teammate and knockdown a contested three-point shot to give Ouachita a 72-70 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday evening.
Ouachita (11-13, 9-10 GAC) swept the season series against Arkansas-Monticello (15-10, 10-9 GAC) for the first time since the 2015-2016 season.
The game was neck-and-neck the whole way as each team countered the other teams run. The Tigers edged out Monticello statistically by shooting 52.9 percent from the floor and limited their opponent to just 47 percent shooting.
The Boll Weevils jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the opening moments of the first half. Ouachita countered with an 8-0 run of their own to retake the lead. With 2:39 to play in the opening half, Kendarious Smith (Canton, Miss.) stole the ball and raced down the court for a layup giving. The basket gave the Tigers the momentum and a six-point lead over the Boll Weevils.
The Tigers just barely edged out the Boll Weevils in the first half as they took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
It was all Ouachita in the early minutes of the second half.
Jordan Corbitt (Frisco, Texas) took a pass from Martin and swished in a three-pointer to give the Tigers an 11-point lead with 16:07 left in the game.
The Tigers then went ice cold from the field and allowed the Boll Weevils to gain momentum and get back in the game. At the 9:26, mark in the game Cobe Goosby hit a mid-range jump shot that pulled the Boll Weevils back within two.
With 3:20 to go in the game, it appeared that the Tigers had seized momentum and sucked the life out of the building, when Matt Stanley (Cabot, Ark.) grabbed the offensive rebound and hammered in the highlight reel, put-back dunk. The dunk gave the Tigers had a 64-57 advantage.
The Boll Weevils stuck around though and made the game interesting down the stretch. Keelin Jackson hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds to go in the game to give Monticello a 70-69 lead. That setup the play for Martin to swish in the game winner for the Tigers seconds later.
Smith and Martin were the only two Tigers to finish in double figure scoring. Smith finished with 19-points while Martin contributed 11-points. For Arkansas-Monticello, they had a trio of players finish in double figures on senior day.
Ouachita will be back in action on Tuesday evening against archrival Henderson State. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff time.
