BETHANY, Okla. – For the first time in two seasons the Ouachita women's soccer team begins Great American Conference play 1-0 after a 2-0 win against Southern Nazarene on Thursday night.
With the victory over Southern Nazarene (1-6, 0-1 GAC) the Ouachita (3-3, 1-0 GAC) improves to .500 on the season. That is impressive considering the Tigers have yet to play a home game this season.
Ouachita came out firing in the opening moments of the match against Southern Nazarene. The Tigers held a definitive advantage in three major offensive categories in shots, shots on goals and corner kicks. In the opening 15 minutes of play, the Tigers offense had earned three corner kicks; unfortunately, they were unable to score off the set pieces.
The Tigers still stayed hungry and wore down the Crimson Storm defense. In the 31
st minute of the contest, senior
Tori Stratton (Flower Mound, Texas) took a pass from fellow senior
Bryson Thomas (Hurst, Texas) and scored the opening goal of the game.
Ouachita went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage over the Crimson Storm. Thomas and sophomore
Ashlyn Heckman (Frisco, Texas) lead the Tigers with three shots apiece.
Erin Webster (Alvin, Texas) stood tall in goal, saving all three shots she faced in the opening half of play.
The second half of play was much different for the two teams as both squads buckled down on defense. Ouachita was only able to get five shots the entire half. Luckily, for the Tigers
Kylie Sharp (Georgetown, Texas) was able to find the back of the net in the 79
th minute of action.
Jaymee Dotson (Princeton, Texas) recorded the assist for Ouachita.
Webster and the defense had to do a little more work in the second half but was able to pick-up four crucial saves in the second half.
Ouachita will stay in the Sooner State and will take on Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. For all the latest news and information on the women's soccer team head over to
