ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Ouachita Baptist is sadden to announce that All-American running back William Miller passed away on January 3,2019.
The Rison, Arkansas native, played for the Tigers from 1975-1978. He still holds the single season rushing record with 1,668 yards during the 1978 season. He only played running back for the Tigers during the 77 and 78 seasons as he came out of high school as a receiver. Along with the single season rushing record Miller holds the team's career record for rushing touchdowns and scoring.
Miller was named an NAIA All-American following the 1978 seasons where he led the nation in rushing and scoring. He was inducted into the Ouachita Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 for his historic 2,723 career rushing yards.
Upon graduation, Miller was given a try out by the Atlanta Falcons, but he ended up with the Canadian Football Team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. During his inaugural season with the Blue Bombers, he won Rookie of the Year rushing for 1,053 yards. He played two more seasons for the Blue Bombers becoming an All-Star in 1982 off of a 1,076 yard season. Between 1983 and 1986 Miller made stints with the Cleveland Browns, the USFL's Pittsburg Maulers and Orlando Renegades and the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
William is worked for Turner & Associates, P.A. in North Little Rock, Arkansas for the last twenty years. William was preceded in death by his sister, Marva Jo Hill (2003) and his brother, Freddie Lee Miller, Jr. (2010), and is survived by his sisters, Janie and Brenda J. Miller of Rison, and his brother, Brian V. Miller. His funeral will be held on January 12 at 2:00 PM at Rison Baptist Church in Rison, Arkansas.
