Finley and Jackson Shine In Opening Day Loss

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Ouachita Tiger softball opens the season with a good outing against Northeastern State University.

Freshman Madison Miller scored both of the Tigers runs in the 5-2 loss against the Riverhawks. Sophomore Tobi Finley and Junior Natalie Jackson each drove in a run during the game. Marissa Butler pitched 6.1 innings recording 4 strikeouts and only allowing one run to cross in her first five innings.

The first inning started off for Marissa Butler and Ouachita as they shutdown Northeastern which saw Butler record her first strikeout of the season. In the bottom half of the first Macy Wilson, who played her first game since coming off injury, recorder her first hit of the season with a single. In the bottom of the second the Tigers capitalized on Faith Melton being hit by a pitch. Freshman Jillian Jones recorded her first career hit as a Tiger and Natalie Jackson drove home the run on a ground ball out.

Marissa Butler continued her consistent game by striking out a batter in every inning to end the top of the third which lead to the Tigers in the bottom of the inning get Macy Wilson in scoring position, but they could not score her. The top of the fourth saw the Riverhawks answer and tie the game 1-1. The Tigers would not allow the game to be tied for long as a Madison Miller lead-off walk led to a run on a Tobi Finley single.

In the fifth both teams had three up and three down innings. However, going into the sixth the Tigers struggled to close out the inning. After forcing the Riverhawks into two pop ups a NSU back to back hits led to the Tigers facing their first deficit of the season. In the seventh freshman pitcher Mabry Smith recorder her first strikeout of her Tiger career. Ouachita could not produce any more hits in the affair and fall in their season opener.
