Tigers Use Lights Out Pitching to Capture a Pair of Wins

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Tiger Softball sweeps Saturday's double header against Oklahoma Baptist behind consistent pitching and timely hits.

In two games the trio of Marissa Butler, Kelsey O'Brien and Mabry Smith only allowed 12 hits and three earned runs combined with 12 strikeouts. Butler and Smith both picked up wins while O'Brien picked up a save on the day.

In the first game and error and a walk put runners on first and third in the second inning. Freshman catcher Jillian Jones would blast a double scoring both runners and giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. The Tigers could not get much more going with their bats, but they would not need to as Marissa Butler and Kelsey O'Brien would pitch lights out.

Butler would go five innings only allowing three hits and the only run of the game. She would also strike out four and only allow one walk. In the sixth inning O'Brien would come in and go two innings allowing three hits but no runs. She would pick up her first save of the season as the Tigers would win the game 2-1.

The second game would begin with the Tigers striking first in the third inning. Callie Jourdan would walk and head to second on a Macy Wilson sacrifice bunt. Natalie Jackson would double to left field scoring Jourdan and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third the Bison would score their only two runs of the game.

The top of the fourth started with a Toby Finley single as the Tigers would put two more runners across the plate on errors and fielder choices. The Tigers would put the nail in the coffin in the top of the fifth as a Jillian Jones single and a Leighton Withers hit by a pitch turned into a run giving Ouachita a 4-2 lead.

The lead was all that freshman Mabry Smith would need as she went the whole seven innings only allowing two runs off of six hits. She would strikeout seven on the day and. Only allow three walks. The win gives her a record of 3-4 on the year and she has accumulated now 55 strikeouts.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow in a double header starting at 1:00 PM at Oklahoma Baptist.
