Playing with a depleted roster due to COVID-19, the Ouachita Baptist men's tennis team fell to Delta State 5-2 at Ward Tennis Center in the season opener for both teams on Friday. The Tigers' two points came from the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots, as
Santiago Kearney and
Francisco Oliveira each earned victories over ranked opponents.
As the Tigers had only five available players, Delta State started the match with a one-match advantage in doubles. The duo of
Carlos Solorzano and Tobia Fuerschuss picked up a 6-4 win on Court 2, but the Statesmen prevailed in the match's opening phase.Â
Kearney put Ouachita on the board with a win at No. 1 singles, defeating No. 26 Emile Leterrier 6-3, 6-4. Oliveira closed the match with a win in a tiebreaker set over No. 36 Hugo Stroppiana-Pillon.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday against Southwest Baptist at 2 p.m. at Ward Tennis Center. If the match is forced to be played indoors, fans will not be permitted inside.
