ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University women's basketball team used a dominant second-half performance to record its first win of the 2021-22 season, a 92-54 victory over Champion Christian College on Tuesday at home.
After only leading by two at halftime, Ouachita (1-1) outscored Champion (1-3) 51-16 in the final 20 minutes.
Ouachita turned up the pressure on defense in the second half, and it paid off with a final total of 19 takeaways resulting in 26 points off turnovers. The Tigers also benefited from a surge in three-point efficiency in the second half, ending the night with 11 treys, nine coming in the third and fourth periods, respectively.
Champion controlled much of the first half, and held as much as a seven-point lead with 5:16 remaining before half.
Aspen Thornton led all scorers with her second straight 20-point effort to the start her Tiger career. She went 9-for-20 from the field, and finished with 23 points.
Laney Mears added 21 points in 29 minutes off the bench, highlighted by her 5-for-5 outing on three-pointers.
Makayla Miller collected 20 points and eight rebounds.
Lauren Wright led Ouachita's rebounding efforts with 10 boards.
The Tigers return to the hardwood following the Thanksgiving holiday with a road trip to Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State this Saturday, November 27. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
