COMMERCE, Texas – Ouachita Baptist University men's basketball player
Kendarious Smith jumped up to No. 9 all-time in school history in scoring in a 74-62 loss to UT-Tyler on Friday night at the A&M-Commerce Hoopsgiving Tournament.
Smith finished the game 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 on foul shots to lead all scorers with 20 points. It was the 12th 20-point game in his Ouachita career. With Friday's point total, Smith is now the ninth best all-time scorer for the Tigers with a career total of 1,137 points.
As for Friday's game, the Tigers (1-3) led for the nearly all of the first 10 minutes, growing their lead up to as much as seven on a three-pointer from
Marvin Williams-Dunn at the 13:42 mark. The Patriots (4-0) responded with a 12-2 run to take their first lead with 9:33 remaining in the first quarter. In the final minutes of the opening half, UTT scored seven in a row to take a double-digit lead of 10 points with 29 seconds remaining before half.
The Patriots took an eight-point lead of 38-30 into the locker room at the break.
The Tigers cut their deficit down to three in the second half, and kept the Patriots from going back to a double-digit lead for most of the second half, with the exception of the final two minutes. With Ouachita forced to foul, the Patriots converted on free throws to grow their lead up to as much as 15 in the final 30 seconds.
In addition to Smith's game-high 20 points,
Ma'Darius Hobson chipped in with nine points and five rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.
Ouachita is back in action on Saturday in the Hoopsgiving Tournament against the host, A&M-Commerce. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
