PLANO, Texas – The Ouachita women's tennis team opened the 2021 season this past weekend with a good showing at the Collin College Invite in Texas.
The invite was a bracket-style tournament with five different flights for singles and three flights for doubles.
Singles (flight one)
Austynn Crocker came in second with a win over Thammy Pinto from Texas Wesleyan (6-2, 6-4) in the second round, and a loss to Samantha Wong of UA-Fort Smith (6-4, 6-0) in the finals.
Singles (flight two)
Haylee Cannon defeated Megan Zeng from UT-Dallas (6-2, 4-6, 10-2) in the opening round, followed by a loss to Larissa Giraldi from Collin College (6-4, 6-2), and then a win over Margaryta Bugaienko from Collin (6-4, 6-3).
Singles (flight three)
Olivia Gaston came in second with a win over Cailtin Souvannavong from Texas Wesleyan (7-6, 7-5), a win over Mimi Li from Collin (4-6, 6-0, 10-4), and then a loss in the finals to Kara Antonio from Texas Wesleyan (2-6, 6-3, 10-6).
Singles (flight four)
Taylor Hansard was OBU's top performer in this flight with a third-place finish. She lost in the opening round, but came back with a win over Reagan Ramsey of Collin (7-6, 6-4) in the second round and a win over her own teammate,
Keelan Williams, in the third place matchup (6-2, 6-4). Williams defeated Melissa McLain of the University of the Southwest in the second round (6-2, 6-3).
Singles (flight five)
Ouachita had two players with a pair of wins in this flight. Ali May was the runner-up of the bracket with a win over Mariah Gonzalez of Collin (6-0, 6-2) in the opening round and a win over Aishwarya Kannan of UT-Dallas (7-6, 7-5) in the semis.
Carla Gallart won her opening round matchup with Mariel Camino from Collin by scores of 7-6 and 6-3. She then lost to Collin's Viktoria Fedorova in the semis 6-0 and 6-0.
Doubles (flight one)
Austyn Crocker and
Clarisa Valenzuela won the opening round match 8-6 over a pair from Collin, and then dropped the semifinal contest 8-2 against a pair from Texas Wesleyan.
Doubles (flight two)
Haylee Cannon and
Olivia Gaston lost in the first round 8-5 to a pair from Texas Wesleyan and then posted an 8-3 win over another pair from Texas Wesleyan.
Doubles (flight three round robin)
Carla Gallart and
Keelan Williams won this flight with an 8-4 win over a pair from Collin College.
The Tigers are back in action this upcoming weekend in Oklahoma City in an invitational hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
