ARKADELPHIA – Ouachita Baptist University Men's basketball team dropped an overtime heartbreaker 74-65 to Arkansas Tech in its Great American Conference home opener.
The Tigers (2-3, 1-1 GAC) started out red hot, jumping out to an 8-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game. The Wonder Boys (4-4, 2-0 GAC) jumped back into it, tying the game up at 12-12 with just under 11 minutes left in the half. Ouachita would regain the lead on a three-pointer from
Kobe Dunlap but would lose it a few minutes later. Tech would push their lead to 10 before Ouachita would cut it to three at the half on a three-pointer from
LaQuan Butler Jr. with five seconds left.
The second half was more back and forth than the first, with a total of nine ties and 10 lead changes. Ouachita would take a two-point lead with just 1:58 left in the game, but Tech would answer back to tie the game, and take their own two-point lead on free throws with only 11 seconds left. After calling a well-timed timeout, Dunlap would find
Ma'Darius Hobson on the inbound for an easy game-tying layup with 1.9 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Overtime would be defensive and controlled by Tech, who outscored the Tigers 11-2, with seven of those 11 points coming from the free-throw line.
LaQuan Butler Jr. and
Tylar Haynes would lead the Tigers with 17 points apiece on the night. Hobson and Dunlap were next with 10 points each.
As a whole, Ouachita shot 36.5 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The Tigers have a chance to bounce back with their final non-conference game of the season as they will take on Champion Christian Tuesday, December 6 at Bill Vining Arena.
