RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The Ouachita women's basketball team erased a 16-point deficit and earned a 63-57 Great American Conference road win over Arkansas Tech on Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.
Ouachita (3-3, 1-1 GAC) found itself down early, going scoreless over the span of more than nine minutes from midway through the first period to midway through the second period. Tech (3-2, 1-1) scored 13 points during that stretch to build its biggest lead of the game at 21-5.
The Ouachita defense then took over with only nine points given up in the second period to keep the game manageable and only have a 10-point deficit going into the locker room at halftime.
The Tigers controlled the third period, scoring 10 points off turnovers and finishing the period with a 9-0 run in the final 2:37 to cut the deficit down to three heading into the fourth.
That run extended to 13-0 in the fourth period to give Ouachita its first lead since the first possession of the game. From that point, the two squads went back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than two until Ouachita went on a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead with 2:36 remaining. Tech cut the deficit down to two on two different occasions down the stretch, but
Laney Mears went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the last two possessions to seal the win.
Heidi Robinson led all scorers with 18 points.
Laney Mears and
Grayson Fairless also reached double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Samantha Watson added eight points and a team-high four rebounds in the win.
The Tigers are back in action next Saturday, December 9 on the road against Southern Arkansas. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Magnolia.
