ALVA, Oklahoma – The Ouachita Baptist University women's basketball team completed a season sweep over Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday night by beating the Rangers on the road by a final score of 80-76.
The Tigers (10-10, 7-9 GAC) beat the Rangers (8-12, 4-12 GAC) in January at home by a score of 57-53.
After five lead changes in first period, the Tigers took over on three-pointer by
Heidi Robinson at the 2:51 mark and held that lead until late in the third period, when the Rangers used a quick 7-2 run to take a three-point lead at the 2:26 mark.
Powered by a pair of three-pointers from
Laney Mears, the Tigers closed out the third period on an 11-1 run to take a seven-point lead heading into the fourth.
Ouachita grew its lead to as much as 13 points in the fourth period before NWOSU made its final push, cutting the margin down to two on two separate possessions in the final minute. Each time, Ouachita responded with made free throws on the other end to prevent any further lead changes.
The Tigers finished the game shooting just under 50 percent from the field (27-for-55) and right at 50 percent on three-pointers (11-for-22).
Laney Mears turned in a career night with 27 points, highlighted by six made three-pointers.
Heidi Robinson also had a career-high in scoring with 20 points with four made three-pointers.
Ouachita is back in action on Saturday at Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Weatherford.
