MONTICELLO, Arkansas – The Ouachita women's basketball team had its double-digit halftime lead erased as Arkansas-Monticello chipped away in the second half and then doubled up the Tigers in overtime for a 76-69 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers clicked offensively and defensively in the early going, shooting 57 percent from the field in the first period and holding the Blossoms to 28 percent shooting for an 11-point lead heading into the second period. Both teams struggled from the field in the second frame, leaving the Tigers with a 32-22 lead at the break.
The third period started much like the first, but swapping the numbers with the Blossoms shooting 57 percent and the Tigers falling down to 40 percent and making only four shots in the frame. Ouachita led 45-44 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The fourth period was back-and-forth with 10 lead changes resulting in a knotted 62-62 score at the end of the regulation. The Blossoms ran out to a five-point lead midway through the overtime period, and the Tigers were never able to recover. UAM took advantage of its free-throw opportunities in the extra frame, knocking down 7-of-8 charity shots to keep the Tigers at bay.
Five Tigers reached double-digits in scoring, led by Heidi Robinson with 17 points. Laney Mears, Abbey Harrison, and Brooke Smith all added 12 points. Madeleine Tipton scored 11.
Brooke Smith recorded 19 rebounds in the game to tie a Ouachita single-game record for the NCAA era. Monica Williams had 19 boards in 2012, also against UAM. Smith's 12 points and 19 rebounds against the Blossoms on Saturday marked her first career double-double.
The Tigers will be back in action next Thursday, December 19 on the road against Harding. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Searcy.
