ARKADELPHIA – It came down to which team had the ball last, which worked out in Henderson State's favor on Thursday night in a 78-76 win over Ouachita across the street at the Duke Wells Center.
Ouachita's Madeleine Tipton nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 76-all, but Henderson's Brynlee Huggins dribbled around a Tiger defender on the other end to get a open shot to fall just inside the arc for the game-winner with 0.9 seconds on the clock.
Thursday's game featured a total of six lead changes and eight tied scores. HSU's largest lead was eight. Ouachita's was five. The point margin stayed within four points for the majority of the back-and-forth game.
Laney Mears needed 10 points in Thursday's game to become the 14th member of the Ouachita Women's Basketball 1,000-point club, and that's exactly what she ended up with, thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play early in the fourth period.
Joey Babel led the Tigers with 13 points. Grayson Fairless recorded her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tipton finished with 12 points. Abbey Harrison added 11 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Tigers are back in action this Saturday, February 17 at home against Arkansas Tech. Saturday is Ouachita Women's Basketball Alumni Day. One of the main events of the day includes an unveiling of a new tribute wall featuring the history of the program. That unveiling is set for 11 a.m. in the lobby of Bill Vining Arena. Tipoff of the game is set for 1 p.m.
