CLAREMORE, Okla. — Despite getting outshot 23-3 during Saturday's match, the Ouachita men's soccer team stood their ground to finish with a 1-1 draw on the road against No. 14 Rogers State at Soldier Field.
The Tigers (2-7-3, 1-5-1 GAC/MIAA) showcased the ability to withstand an onslaught of shots and displayed the grit to compete with the nation's best in a physical contest that featured 30 combined fouls and four issued yellow cards. A pair of freshmen ignited the scoring and instantly put the pressure on the Hillcats (9-1-3, 5-1-1 GAC) in the 11th minute after midfielder Andrew Castellanos threaded a pinpoint pass to find forward Nathan Buwemi in stride, who then buried his second goal of the season from close range to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
Rogers State continued to press the issue with a barrage of shots and finally broke through in the 79th minute following a foul inside the box as senior Brandon O'Rourke drilled the equalizer on a penalty kick.
Ouachita sophomore goalkeeper Isaac Murie delivered an outstanding performance in his second straight start by securing eight saves and allowed just the penalty kick to breach the net. The Hillcats outshot Ouachita 14-1 in the second half, but Murie held firm to secure the road point.
The Tigers return home to host Northeastern State on Wednesday at Kluck Field in Arkadelphia. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the Tigers look to continue building on their strong defensive showings in Great American Conference play.
