ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Ouachita men's soccer team battled through a physical match Wednesday but the Tigers were unable to overcome a second-half surge in a 2-0 loss to Northeastern State at Kluck Field.
The Tigers' tough defensive effort kept it scoreless through the first half, but the RiverHawks capitalized following the halftime break. After a handball just outside the box set up Northeastern State with a dangerous free kick, redshirt-junior Martin Martinez delivered a curling strike from 20-yards out into the top left corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
The Riverhawks doubled their lead just 10 minutes later after senior Joshua Adeyemi sent a crosser toward the front of the net and sophomore Carter Adams connected on a header from point-blank range to score his eighth goal of the season.
The Tigers (2-8-3, 1-6-1 GAC/MIAA) created several chances in the second half but could not break through past the RiverHawks' back line. Northeastern State (7-5-2, 4-4-0 GAC/MIAA) outshot Ouachita 15-6 and held an edge in possession, 55% to 45%.
Sophomore Isaac Murie, who was named Great American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, made one save just ahead of the 10-minute mark, but the Riverhawks scored twice to hand Ouachita the loss. Freshman midfielder Phillip Bölk led the Tigers with four shots, including two shots on goal.
Ouachita turns its attention to celebrate senior day against Dallas Christian on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kluck Field pending a weather advisory.
