SEAGO EARNS MIAA WRESTLER OF THE WEEK AFTER THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ouachita heavyweight BK Seago was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Wrestler of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Seago controlled the final bout in last Sunday's dual meet and picked up takedowns in all three periods, rolling to an 11-0 major decision over Oklahoma City's 285-pounder Jonathan Chiaffitelli. The junior from Collinsville, Oklahoma improved his record to 3-1 this season and has earned bonus points in three straight bouts for the Tigers.

"Early into the match, I wanted to put the pressure on," Seago said. "I was wrestling a quicker opponent, so I had to beat him to the punch. I went straight to working my underhooks and getting him moving around to set him up for those shots. What really helped me after initially taking the shot was chain wrestling to finish the position."

Seago closed the door in Ouachita's win over Williams Baptist last Wednesday with a first-period pin in 1:19. Despite being light at heavyweight, Seago confessed he rediscovered his speed after trimming down between 12 to 15 pounds, which has reshaped his conditioning and built more confidence to apply pressure on his opponents.

Ouachita ninth-year head coach Kevin Crutchmer acknowledged Seago's decision to cut into a leaner frame was the turning point.

"He's very effective with his underhook, whether it's knee picks or single legs," Coach Crutchmer said. "He's an exceptional wrestler with high-level skills, and getting back to the right weight has brought his confidence back. Since he's done that, his cardio and speed have completely changed his wrestling. You saw it against Williams Baptist and at Oklahoma City."

The MIAA award marks the second consecutive week a Ouachita wrestler was recognized as Seago follows 197-pounder Cayden Byrd, who earned the weekly honor after winning the Viking Open.

Ouachita returns Wednesday for a Senior Night dual meet against Carl Albert State at 7 p.m. inside the Sturgis Physical Education Center.
