ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita women's basketball team completed the regular season sweep over its cross-street rival Henderson State on Thursday at home by a final score of 70-52.
With Thursday's win, Ouachita now owns two convincing victories over the Reddies this season, including an 80-58 drubbing across the street in January.
The Tigers broke the ice early in the opening period and never trailed throughout the game. Both teams struggled from the floor early, but HSU's seven percent shooting in the first frame allowed the Tigers to keep their distance despite only shooting 29 percent.
In the second period, Ouachita outscored HSU 20-9 and a 12-0 run to close the half put the Tigers up by 14 at the break.
Ouachita maintained its double-digit advantage throughout the second half, including its largest lead of the game of 24 coming early in the fourth period.
The Tigers finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field (24-for-59), 35 percent on three-pointers (7-for-20), and 88 percent on foul shots (15-for-17). HSU made 10-of-16 shots in the fourth period to improve its overall shooting percentage to 27 (16-for-59). The Reddies shot 20 percent on threes (6-for-30) and 64 percent on free throws (14-for-22).
Laney Mears led all scorers with 18 points and added a game-high six steals.
Samantha Watson and
Heidi Robinson each had 12 points in the win.
Madeleine Tipton also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points.
Abbey Harrison turned in a game-high nine rebounds.
The Tigers hit the road this Saturday to take on Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Russellville.
