ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita men's soccer kept No. 11 Rogers State scoreless for the first hour, but the visiting Hillcats broke through with two goals in the second half to hand the Tigers a 2-0 loss Saturday at Kluck Field.
Rogers State had a 13-3 edge in corner kicks, but the Hillcats (6-0-2, 2-0 GAC) took advantage on a Tigers' corner kick to strike first. In a 10-second span, RSU senior Brandon O'Rourke came through with a loose ball and ignited the surge at midfield by feeding sophomore Noah Preston Watkins on a breakaway past Ouachita's back line. Watkins escaped the attempted tackle from Ouachita sophomore Jacoby Welsh, dribbled past goalkeeper Dillon Staal and struck a low shot with his left foot to the right side of the net in the 62nd minute to give Rogers State a 1-0 lead. The Hillcats pounced on another loose ball ten minutes later as midfielder Oliver Hemlin delivered a strike from the top left corner of the box to the right side of the net to double the lead in the 72nd minute.
Staal secured four saves, while Rogers State goalkeeper Jaxon Kendall needed just one save to secure the shutout. Ouachita (1-4-2, 0-2 GAC) pushed for an answer by attempting seven shots, but an early shot from freshman Phillip Bok in the 15th minute became the lone shot on target against Kendall.
The loss marked Ouachita's third straight scoreless outing. The Tigers travel to face Northeastern State for a GAC match next Saturday.
