KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ouachita heavyweight BK Seago delivered a statement win in the clutch to earn his second Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association Wrestler of the Week award, the league announced Tuesday.Â
Pressure is a privilege.Twice this season, the Tigers' dual meet came down to the final bout at heavyweight. In both moments that demanded everything he had left, Seago answered the call with a defining performance to seal the dual. Back in early November, Seago clinched the Tigers first dual win of the season by delivering a first-period pin to lift Ouachita over his former school Drury in Arkadelphia.Â
"It's high pressure, it's intense, and there is a lot of weight on your shoulders," Seago said. "But I view it as something I enjoy to feel and experience because these times do not last forever."
That mindset was on full display last Tuesday as Seago avenged his last loss from the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis by defeating Newman's ninth-ranked heavyweight Caleb Wunsch in a 13-4 major decision. The commanding victory clinched Ouachita's first MIAA dual win of the 2025-26 season in front of a supportive crowd in Hot Springs, Ark.
"Mentally I just feel so comfortable because I train for these moments," Seago said. "Once they present themselves, I'm comfortable and excited to go fly around and do what I love to do. I thank God every day for the ability to do this sport and to have these kinds of experiences."
The Tigers No. 15 ranked heavyweight improved his record to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in dual matches during his junior campaign. The Collinsville, Okla. native has emerged victorious in nine straight dual bouts. Ouachita's ninth-year head coach Kevin Crutchmer credits Seago's growth to his intelligence on the mat and his discipline in weekly planning while leading up to competition.
"He's a very educated wrestler," Crutchmer said. "He is very well-versed and that allows him to adapt and make quick adjustments. We develop a plan of execution and he sticks with the plan."
That plan unfolded with precision against Wunsch. After a scoreless first period, Seago scored a reversal from the bottom position to take a 2-0 lead. After Wunsch escaped, Seago attacked with a low single-leg that dropped his opponent to his back. Seago climbed up to lock in a half-nelson and turned a takedown into a 4-point nearfall. In the third period, with the dual still hanging in the balance and his opponent attacking more aggressively, Seago countered a headlock using a throw-by, which dropped Wunsch to the mat for a dual-clinching takedown.Â
"It felt good to get that win, no doubt," Seago said. "I have a lot of respect for Caleb (Wunsch). He's a tough opponent and a great guy in general, but these matches are the ones you look forward to. It's something I wanted to make the most of."
Ouachita (5-6, 1-2 MIAA) will close out the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a road trip to face No. 14 Central Missouri.
