ARKADELPHIA – The 38th-ranked Ouachita men's tennis team squashed a singles rally from Emporia State to beat the Hornets 4-2 on Wednesday inside the Ward Tennis Center.
The Tigers improve to 10-1 this season, while the Hornets drop to 5-3.
The doubles point in Wednesday's match needed a tiebreaker after the teams split wins on courts one and two, including a 6-1 win on two for the 25th ranked doubles tandem of
Moritz Buss and
Aaron Osmond.
Tinus Mueller and Brenner Maximilan came through with a 7-6 win on three, including a 10-8 edge in the tiebreaker, to seal the point.
Ramon Strassmann and
Yarin Aebi put the Tigers up 3-0 in singles with wins on courts one and two, respectively. Strassman, who was just named the MIAA/GAC South Division Athlete of the Week, had a convincing victory over his ESU counterpart on Wednesday to remain unbeaten this spring in singles at 11-0. Aebi rallied for a tiebreaker win in the first set and then won the second convincingly to give his team a three-point advantage with four singles matches left undecided.
ESU won three-set battles on courts three and four to make it 3-2 to set up the match winner at No. 5 from
Guillaume Randoux, who won 6-2 and 6-3 to finish off the Hornets.
The Tigers are off for a week before returning to action next Thursday, March 19 at home against Washburn.
