Volleyball Fights Hard, but Falls in Four Matches at CBU Invitational

MEMPHIS, Ten.- The Ouachita Lady Tigers (0-4)  began their 2012 season at the Christian Brothers Invitational in Memphis this weekend. Other participants at the invitational included Tiffin University, Christian Brothers University, West Georgia and Lincoln Memorial University providing a very difficult weekend slate of games.. The Lady Tigers suffered a couple of tough losses in their Friday games, falling 3-1 to West Georgia and taking Christian Brothers to five sets before falling. The Lady Tigers kicked off their Saturday games with another five set game, but unfortunately, they were unable to knock off Lincoln Memorial, falling 3-2. In their last game of the tournament, the Lady Tigers fell to Tiffin by a score of 3-0.

In their match-up with West Georgia, the Lady Tigers played the Lady Wolves tough, scoring over 20 in two of the three sets that they lost. It wasn't enough though, as three of West Georgia's players finished with double digit numbers of kills. Ouachita's Megan Askew led her team in kills, recording 13 kills as well as four blocks in the contest. Savannah White recorded the highest attack percentage for the Lady Tigers, converting on 75 percent of her attack attempts. White also led the team with 22 assists. Sara Mitchell added 16 assists to the Lady Tigers' totals. Allison Frizzell finished the game with a team-high 16 assists, while Chelsey Hess added 13 digs to Ouachita's totals. Kelley Ballard finished the game with an impressive five blocks, also adding seven kills.

In their second game of the day, Ouachita played Christian Brothers, who participated in the NCAA tournament in 2011, all that they could handle. The Lady Tigers pushed the game to a fifth set before falling by a score of 15-10. Five Lady Tigers finished with five or more kills in the game, with Askew leading the team with 11. White was again the leading assister, recording 22 in the game, while Mitchell added 14 of her own. Frizzell was at the top of her game, recording 37 digs, while White, Jillian Jeffcoat and Mitchell added 14, 13 and 12 digs respectively. Six players on the team finished with blocks, with Askew posting a team-high seven. Kelsi Bodine and White both finished the match with two service aces, leading the team.

The Lady Tigers kicked off their Saturday with a match-up against Lincoln Memorial University. The Lady Tigers, again facing a tough opponent, forced the games to five sets, but were unable to take the win in the end, falling three sets to two. Faith Avalos led the team in kills, recording 11 during the game, while Bodine and Abby Pickett both finished with nine kills. White led the team with 21 assists, while Mitchell added 20 to the Lady Tigers' totals. Frizzell led the team in digs, with 25. Chelsey Hess had 11 digs of her own. Jeffcoat finished the match with an attacking percentage of .400. The Lady Tigers forced a fifth set, winning the fourth by a score of 25-19, but fell in the fifth by a score of 15-8.

The Lady Tigers last match of the weekend proved to be their most difficult, as they dropped the game in three sets to Tiffin University. The Lady Tigers were led in kills by Pickett, who recorded nine in the match, while White, Howk, Kelley Ballard and Frizzell all finished with attack percentages of .500. Frizzell registered 14 digs in the match, with White grabbing 15 assists. Tiffin was led by Maureen Kurtz, who registered 11 kills, and Rachel Reamer, who collected 14 digs in the match.
 
Ouachita will try to rebound from their tough weekend on September 4, when they travel to Little Rock for a match-up with Philander Smith. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
