ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Tigers men's tennis team closed out last weekend with wins over Mississippi College and Delta State to improve to 6-0 in 2016. The Tigers defeated Mississippi College 7-0 and Delta State 5-2.
The Tigers faced an injury-depleted Mississippi College team last Friday and started the match with a 2-0 advantage. Despite the edge to start the match, head coach
Craig Ward knew his team would need to be foucsed to get the win.
"Each match presents a new set of challenges and opportunities," coach Ward said. "I told our guys to focus on their individual matches and nothing else. Coach Boelter and I go way back and I knew he would be telling his guys the same thing and they would give it their all. We had a couple of tough matches but took care of business and got another victory."
In Saturday's match versus Delta State, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping he doubles matches. Delta State responded by winning the one and two position single matches, but wins by
Jason Mechali and
David Carbo secured the 5-2 victory for Ouachita. Coach Ward was pleased with the effort from his team.
"We started really fast with the three doubles wins which can give you false sense of security. I think it took Delta a little while to get used to playing indoors. They made the singles matches very tough. Delta fought hard and made us really work to close out the match."
The Tigers travel to Wichita Falls on March 3, to face the Mustangs of Midwestern State University. The match is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.
