The Tigers are 5-0 for the 13th time in school history and are ranked in the top five nationally in all major NCAA Division II polls. Ouachita is coming off a 48-7 road win over Northwestern Oklahoma State last Saturday, its fourth game of the season scoring at least 40 points and fourth consecutive game to allow two scores or less.

After a winless 2021 season, SWOSU is 3-2 under its first-year head coach Josh Kirkland, and has won back-to-back games for the first time since 2019. The Bulldogs are coming off a 37-27 win over Arkansas-Monticello at home last Saturday.

The Ouachita-SWOSU game was dubbed the Paul Sharp Cup in 2013, honoring the late coach who led the Bulldogs to the NAIA national championship in 1996. Sharp, brother of current Ouachita Athletic Director David Sharp, played football and graduated from Ouachita, and was an assistant coach for the Tigers from 1974-78. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Central Arkansas and Lamar, and served the bulk of his coaching career as the head coach at SWOSU from 1986-2004. He passed away in 2012. Since the inception of the trophy game, Ouachita is 7-1 against SWOSU. The Tigers lead the all-time series 13-4.
