CLINTON, Mississippi – The Ouachita Baptist University women's basketball team is set for a happy Thanksgiving after recording a 73-62 road win over Mississippi College on Tuesday night.
After a close first half with Ouachita (2-1) holding a one-point lead after the first period and a three-point lead at halftime, the Tigers came out on fire in the third period, getting its first double-digit lead at the 7:46 mark of the third period on a three-pointer from
Laney Mears to cap an 8-2 run to start the half.
The Tigers outscored the Choctaws (1-4) 26-14 in the third period to build a big lead, which hit its largest at 17 (60-43) early in the fourth period. Ouachita led by at least 11 in the final 15 minutes of the game.
The win can be credited to Ouachita's efficient shooting performance as a team. The Tigers started slow at 6-for-15 from the field in the first period, but then shot 80 percent (8-for-10) in the second and 11-for-15 in the third (73.3 percent). Overall, Ouachita connected on 61 percent of its shots.
Ouachita's
Makayla Miller led all scorers in the game, going 12-for-14 from the field for 25 points. It was the 11th game of her career to have at least 20. The Little Rock, Arkansas native also had a game-high eight assists, and tied for the team-high in rebounds with five.
Madeleine Tipton and
Laney Mears also reached double-digits in scoring with 14 points each.
Following the Thanksgiving break, the Tigers will open Great American Conference play with a road trip to face Harding on December 1 and a home game against Arkansas Tech on December 3.
