SEARCY, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team came away victorious in its first midweek game of the 2023 season, defeating Harding in a non-conference game on Tuesday in Searcy by a final score of 6-4.
The Tigers (8-5) built a 6-0 lead in the first five innings, which ended up being necessary to hold off a late run by the Bisons (12-4), who rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ouachita started the scoring on a two-run single by
Isaac Nowell in the top of the first.
Michael Quinones put the Tigers up 3-0 in the second on an RBI single, and put his team up 5-0 on two-run single in the fourth.
Cade Burris was responsible for Ouachita's final run of the game with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
For the seventh time this season, the Tigers recorded double-digits in the hit category with 11 in the win over the Bisons.
G. Allen led the team at 3-for-4.
Wyatt Core and Quinones each had two hits in the win.
The Ouachita pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run on six hits. Starter
Hayden Childers (4-0) earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
Dustin Bermudez earned his first save of the season by getting the final out of the ninth inning with the potential tying run on deck.
Tuesday's game was the first of five games scheduled between the Tigers and Bisons in the 2023 season. The two squads will meet in Arkadelphia for a three-game Great American Conference series in April.
Next up for Ouachita is a three-game GAC series this weekend on the road against Arkansas-Monticello.
