ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita women's soccer team avoided a Great American Conference loss at home on Thursday with a penalty kick goal with two seconds remaining to tie Northwestern Oklahoma State 1-1.
NWOSU (2-4-3, 0-1-2 GAC) appeared to have secured the win after gaining control of the ball in the final seconds, but just before the horn, a Ranger defender was whistled for a handball inside the penalty box when she picked up the ball to celebrate.
Ouachita (2-4-1, 1-0-1) capitalized on the opportunity as
Allison Reece sent the penalty kick past the NWOSU goalkeeper on the left side of the goal for the equalizer. It was Reece's first collegiate goal.
The Tigers were the aggressors in the first half, but the momentum shifted to the Rangers side in the final 45 minutes resulting in the shots on goal to be even until the final 12 minutes with Ouachita's offense firing four shots on frame playing from behind.
Overall, the Tigers held a 19-10 margin in total shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on frame.
Ouachita is back in action this Saturday at home against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for noon at Kluck Field.
