HAYS, Kansas – Hudson Herring combined for five wins over the weekend to lead the Ouachita wrestling team at Fort Hays State University.
The Tigers started the weekend with an MIAA dual against Fort Hays State on Saturday. Although the purple Tigers came up short in the final score 26-16, Herring, Jimmy Anderson, and Jaylon Otero each came up with big bout victories.
Anderson started off with a 15-1 major over FHSU's Andrew Honas at 133, highlighted by a takedown and near-fall in the first period. Herring followed at 141 with a pin in 4:34 over FHSU's Kevin Honas. Later in the 157, Otero earned a pin of his own, this one coming in 2:54 over FHSU's Charlie Hutson.
Three other bouts in Saturday's dual were decided by four points or less, including a pair of 2-1 wins for the black-and-gold Tigers in the 174 over Luke Brooks and the 285 over BK Seago.
Ouachita stuck around for Sunday's Bob Smith Open hosted by FHSU, resulting in 22 combined wins for the Tigers. Herring went 4-2 in the 141 bracket, including a 15-2 major over his own teammate Brayden Cash. He also earned wins by decision over New Mexico Highlands' Samuel Eveland and Western Colorado's Zack Flowers.
Other top performers for the Tigers in the event included BK Seago, who went 3-2 in the 285 bracket highlighted by two pins. Seth Cano, Jack Golowenski, Henry Martin, Brooks Schrimsher, and Parker Henry all earned two wins in their respective brackets.
The Tigers close the 2024 portion of the 2024-25 schedule this weekend in Indianapolis at the Midwest Classic.
