BETHANY, Oklahoma – The Ouachita women's basketball team came up short in a defensive battle with fifth-ranked Southern Nazarene on Thursday with the Crimson Storm coming out on top 56-41.
The Tigers (7-10, 5-8 GAC) dug themselves a hole too deep to dig out of by scoring only three points in the second period. The Tiger defense only allowed 13 points in that second frame to allow the Crimson Storm to hold a 32-16 lead at the halftime break.
Other than the limited offensive production in the second period, the Tigers hung with the Storm (19-0, 13-0 GAC), even outscoring SNU 15-12 in the third period and matching baskets in the fourth period for just a two-point deficit.
Both teams struggled in shooting with Ouachita connecting on only 24 percent of its shots (13-for-53) and SNU hitting on 32 percent (20-for-61). SNU found success in the paint throughout the game, ending with a 30-12 scoring margin in that category, getting more than half of its points down low.
Laney Mears led the Tigers with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting, all made shots coming from beyond the arc. Madeline Tipton and
Micah Russell each had eight points in the game. Tipton and
Audri Winfrey tied for the game-high in rebounds with seven each.
The Tigers continue their road trip in central Oklahoma on Saturday in Shawnee to face off against Oklahoma Baptist. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
