ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita women's basketball team erased a 20-point deficit and used a 28-point run to earn a 57-50 Great American Conference victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday at home.
After a dominant second-period performance with SWOSU outscoring Ouachita 24-5, the Bulldogs later reached their largest lead of 20 points with 2:12 remaining in the third period.
Ouachita began its comeback from that point, scoring the next 28 points in a run that stretched from the final two minutes of the third period to the 1:10 mark of the fourth. During that run of nearly 11 minutes, Ouachita shot 69 percent from the field (11-for-16), while SWOSU was 0-for-15 from the field and 0-for-8 on three-pointers.
Overall for the game, the Tigers finished at 49 percent from the field (22-for-45), 47 percent on three-pointers (7-for-15), and 60 percent on foul shots (6-for-10). SWOSU's dry spell dropped the Bulldogs to 29 percent overall for the game (18-for-61) and 33 percent on threes (10-for-30).
Laney Mears led the Tigers with 14 points, 12 coming on three-pointers.
Madeleine Tipton added 11 points.
Brooke Smith finished with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Smith was Ouachita's leading scorer during the 28-point run with eight points during that stretch.
The Tigers went 5-0 during this past home-stand, which included an exhibition victory. The squad is on the road next week in Oklahoma, taking on Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday, January 16 and Southern Nazarene the following Saturday.
