OXFORD, Ohio – The Ouachita men's and women's swimming & diving teams had a good showing at the Miami University Invitational this past week in Ohio with a combined total of 10 NCAA B standard times and 102 combined personal bests.
The Tigersharks were up against top swimming & diving programs from multiple levels, including NCAA Division I opponents Miami (Ohio), Notre Dame, Marshall, Indiana State, Valparaiso, and Illinois State. Ouachita and Indianapolis were the only D2 teams in the field.
The Ouachita men's team finished fourth out of five teams and combined for 60 personal best performances. The women's team finished eighth of eight teams and combined for 42 personal bests.
Stefan Duca was the top performer for the men's team, finishing 26th of 148 swimmers with 708.2 total points. He set a new school record in the 200 backstroke with a fourth-place finish and an NCAA B standard time of 1:45.07, which is currently a top 10 time in the nation. Duca also turned in B times in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle at 4:28.83 and 1:37.78, respectively. He added another B cut as lead off for the 400 freestyle relay team, finishing his leg at 44.84.
Tyler Andruss also had B cuts in the 500 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle with times of 4:31.47 and 15:50.71, respectively.
Sam Ragsdell and
Ian Redman Aguilar both hit NCAA B times in the 100 freestyle with eighth and ninth place finishes and times of 44.50 and 44.66, respectively.
On the women's side,
Anna Phelps turned in B standard times in the 100 and 200 butterfly events with times of 55.80 and 2:03.03, respectively. Her 200 fly time is currently No. 12 in the nation. Phelps,
Aurora Ruiz, and
Kaitlyn Koenig all earned points for the women's team.
Other top performances for the men's included the relay squads. The 400 freestyle relay team of
Stefan Duca,
Ian Redman Aguilar,
James Savarese, and
Sam Ragsdell came in fifth with a time of 2:58.38. The 800 freestyle team of
Stefan Duca,
Tyler Andruss,
Ian Redman Aguilar, and
Vince Pal came in fifth with a time of 6:39.74. The 200 freestyle relay team of
Sam Ragsdell,
David Ware,
Vince Pal, and
Ian Redman Aguilar also came in fifth with a time of 1:21.20.
Following a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Tigersharks will return to NSISC competition, going across the street on Friday, December 5 to take on Henderson State in a conference dual.
