ARKADELPHIA – Ouachita Baptist University Head Football Coach
Todd Knight has finalized his staff, including the return of
Brady Carson as defensive coordinator.
Carson was Ouachita's outside linebackers coach from 2020-21, a tenure marked by a worldwide epidemic that canceled the 2020 season. Carson aided the Tigers in the 2021 season to a 9-2 finish. In addition to his role as defensive coordinator at Ouachita this time around, Carson will also coach linebackers.
For the past three seasons, Carson has coached at three different institutions. Most recently, he was the special teams coordinator, co-defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach at Belhaven University. In 2023, he was the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. In 2022, he served as linebackers coach at Georgetown College.
Carson got his start in coaching at his alma mater, the now-defunct Birmingham Southern College, where he worked with linebackers and defensive backs for three years as an undergraduate assistant coach.
"We're glad to have Coach Carson back at Ouachita," said Knight. "He is an excellent coach and has done a good job of preparing himself to be a defensive coordinator at this level."
Knight also added
Josh Miller to the staff as the safeties coach. Miller comes to the Tigers from Lamar University, where he was a graduate assistant coach working with defensive backs for the past two seasons. He got his start in coaching at the NCAA Division II level as a graduate assistant wide receivers coach at Mississippi College in 2022.
As a player, Miller wore three different jerseys, starting with Jackson State in 2016 and then to East Mississippi Community College, where he earned all-conference honors and was a part of the 2018 national championship team. He finished his playing career at Mississippi College.
"Coach Miller comes highly recommended from coaches that I know personally," said Knight. "He has proven himself already with his work ethic and his commitment to doing things the right way."
Three other changes were made internally to give coaches already on staff advanced roles.
Whit Jones, who has been an assistant coach working with receivers the past two years, is moving over to coach running backs.
Marc Guerrero, who has been on staff for two years as a defensive backs assistant, will now primarily work with corner backs.
Hunter Scott, who has worked with running backs for the past two seasons, is now moving into a special teams role and will also work with receivers.
"With the exception of Coach Miller, these men have already proven themselves within our program, and Josh has hit transitioned well to make our program better already," said Knight. "These young guys are really way ahead of their years… I'm excited to get into spring ball with this staff. With the coaches we already had in place, we have such a great mix of diversity in age, knowledge, coaching experience, and playing experience. It's a great group of guys that are investing in these student-athletes from all aspects, not just coaching football."
