ARKADELPHIA, Ark.- A last second rebound and put-back for Texas Woman's University's (1-0) Taylor Swift sealed a win with less than a second remaining over the Ouachita Lady Tigers (0-1) on Tuesday evening. The Lady Tigers and Pioneers played a tightly contested game throughout, with 17 lead changes and the score was tied seven times, but in the end, the Pioneers prevailed 60-59.
Both teams were hampered by poor shooting in the first half, but the second half was a much different story. Ouachita's
Monica Williams led the team with 19 points and four rebounds while adding an assist, a block and two steals, but her efforts fell short. Other double-digit scorers for the Lady Tigers included
Elise Holman and
Nashia James, both of which finished with 12 points.
Free throws might have been the deciding factor in the game, as Ouachita only made 53.3 percent of their chances from the line. The Lady Tigers forced 19 turnovers in the game, but only had a +2 margin, as they turned the ball over 17 times as well.
Tabatha Thurmond and Toree Mason both posted strong second half performances for Texas Woman's as Thurmand scored nine of her 16 in the 20 minute period, while Mason scored 13 of her 16 in the half.
The first half of play was slow, with the Lady Tigers trailing 22-21 at the break, but both teams came out hot in the second half, as they both put up 38 points during the period.
The Lady Tigers will have a chance to rebound from the loss on Monday, November 19, when they travel to Jessieville High School in Jessieville, Arkansas to compete in the Hot Springs Village Lions Club Classic against Union University. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
