EDMOND, Oklahoma – After a weekend of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships, the Ouachita Baptist University men's tennis team will be sending two players off to the ITA Cup later this month.
Francisco Oliveira and
Santiago Kearney won the main draw in doubles on Sunday, defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State's duo of Guilherme dos Santos and Marin Jurkovic by final scores of 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), and 10-4 in the finals. The Tiger duo had their backs against the wall after losing the first set, and found themselves down in the second set as well before coming back to win. The third set was determined by a 10-point match tiebreaker, which the Tigers clinched 10-8.
Along the way to their doubles victory, the Tiger duo had wins over teams from Augustana (8-2) in the opening round, Northwest Missouri State (8-6) in the second round, Washburn (8-6) in the quarterfinals, and another team from Washburn (8-5) in the semis.
Oliveira and Kearney will now advance to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia on October 14-17. The championships will consist of eight automatic qualifiers in both singles and doubles from each region around the country. The ITA will also make eight at-large selections next week to determine the rest of the 16-person/team finals.
Oliveira also made it to the semifinals of the singles tournament. Other top performances included
Alex Blanchar advancing to the round of 16 in singles,
Matias Parzajuk winning his consolation final in singles, and
Tobias Fuerschuss and
Fernando Docters winning a consolation championship in doubles.
"We had a great week," said Head Coach
Craig Ward. "I couldn't be happier for Francisco and Santiago. Making the ITA Cup is a special achievement. I am also proud of the way their teammates were supporting them the whole way."
