HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team secured its first Great American Conference tournament victory since 2015 on Saturday with an 8-7 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State at Majestic Park.
The Tigers (31-20) fell behind early when the Savage Storm (32-19) scratched across three runs in the bottom of the second inning. However, Ouachita starter Cooper Timmons locked in and retired the 12 Southeastern batters in a row from the last out of the second through the second out of the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, Ouachita trimmed the Southeastern lead to just one run on one swing in the top of the fourth inning, a two-run homerun Cade Burris, his seventh of the season.
The Tigers rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning, sending 11 batters to the plate in the frame and getting two-out, two-run hits from Tallon Heine and Isaac Nowell.
Ouachita led 8-3 heading into the final two innings before Southeastern rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a two-run homerun and then making things interesting in the ninth by getting two more and leaving the bases loaded at the time of the final out.
Cameron Marchant earned his third save of the season after getting the final out after coming in with the bases loaded.
Timmons improved his record to 8-3 with the win, finishing with three runs allowed on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the first seven innings.
Ouachita moves into the winner's bracket of the tournament, and will face either Southern Arkansas or Arkansas Tech on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
