ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University softball team split its double header against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff today, dropping the first game 9-1 and winning the second game 8-0.
Today's games were played at Henderson State's Dee White Field to wet field conditions at Ouachita's Sully Anderson Field.
Game 1: UAPB 9, Ouachita 1
Arkansas-Pine Bluff came out hot in game one, taking an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Tigers answered back quickly and tied the game on a
Maggi Huddleston single that scored
Hope Waid in the bottom of the first. The rest of the game was all Golden Lions, as UAPB scored eight unanswered runs between the second and sixth innings. The game ended after the sixth due to the eight-run sportsmanship rule.
- Maggi Huddleston had the game's lone RBI for the Tigers.
- Hope Waid went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases.
- Hannah Hunter was the starting pitcher and took the loss in this game.
Game 2: Ouachita 8, UAPB 0
- Erin Williams went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, a double and a walk.
- Riley Gillis and Jessalyn Ahrens each went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
- Maggie Huddleston led the Tigers with three RBI that came off a three-run homer.
Tuesday Melton earned her third win and first shutout of the season in the circle. Melton went all five innings for her third complete game of the year, allowing just three hits while striking out five and only waking one batter.
Game two saw the Tigers come out hot, as they put up six runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came when
Hope Waid scored from third on a wild pitch. Ouachita then took a 4-0 lead on Huddleston's three run homer that score
Erin Williams and
Katelyn Provence. A
Jessalyn Ahrens single scored Gillis to make it 5-0 Tigers. The final run of the first inning came when
Callie Jourdan scored on an error caused by Waid. The Tigers and Golden Lions traded scoreless innings in the second and third. Ouachita added two more runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Williams and a Gillis sacrifice fly to but the Tigers on top 8-0. The Tigers sat UAPB down in order in the top of the fifth, with two strikeouts from Melton to enforce the run-rule to get the Tigers a big victory.
The Tigers will go on the road this week to Jackson, Tennessee to take on the Union University Bulldogs on Wednesday February 15 in a double header.
