HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team opened the 2023 season on Friday with a 7-6 win over Washburn at Majestic Park in the Mike Dugan Collegiate Baseball Invitational.
Michael Quinones went 3-for-4 with two RBI in his Tiger debut,
Wyatt Core went 3-for-5, and
G. Allen hit the go-ahead homerun in the top of the ninth inning to highlight Ouachita's offensive performance.
Starting pitcher
Cooper Timmons struck out nine in the first five innings, and
Dustin Bermudez came in in the eight inning to keep the Ichabods scoreless to earn the win. Bermudez struck out three of the four batters he face in the ninth.
The Tigers jumped out a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by Quinones. Another run came across the second on an RBI single by Bermudez to tie the game at 3-3. In the fifth, Ouachita took advantage of three walks and a couple of defensive miscues by Washburn to push across three runs to take a 6-3 lead.
Washburn plated single runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings to set up Allen's go-ahead homerun in the ninth.
The Tigers start a nine-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith at Rab Rodgers Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
