KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Ouachita Baptist University's
Phil Exner has been named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics/Great American Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and third time of his career.
The Konstanz, Germany native was the only Ouachita play to go undefeated over the past week with a 3-0 record first position doubles with teammate
Alex Blanchar and a 3-0 record in second position singles.
As a team, Ouachita went 2-1 over the past week with wins over Emporia State (7-0) and No. 37 Auburn-Montgomery (4-3), and a close 4-3 loss to No. 34 Mississippi College.
In doubles, Exner and Blanchar, the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in D2, started with a 6-3 win over Emporia State's top duo, followed by a 6-3 win over MC's No. 1 duo, which was ranked No. 36 in the nation. Later in the week, he and Blanchar took down AUM's top duo by a score of 6-2.
In singles, Exner earned wins over ESU's Theo Belmonte (6-4, 7-5), No. 34 Rafael Sabio from MC (6-4, 4-6, 6-2), and AUM's Muhamad Bedwan (4-6, 6-1, 6-3). Exner is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation in singles.
Exner and the 13th-ranked Tigers are back in action on Thursday against seventh-ranked West Florida in Pensacola.
