KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The Ouachita Baptist University men's tennis team earned its fourth consecutive conference weekly honor and fifth overall of the season with
Alex Blanchar being selected as the latest Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association/Great American Conference Athlete of the Week.
For Blanchar, the honor is his second of the 2023 season. He led the Tigers in a pair of close conference matches over the past week in a 4-3 win over then-ranked No. 48 Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a 4-3 loss to then-ranked No. 49 Harding University.
The Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Spain native was undefeated at first position singles for the week, taking down a pair of nationally-ranked opponents. He beat Southeastern's Stipan Madzar in straight sets by a pair of 6-3 scores, and then took down Harding's Dani Ortiz also in straight sets with a pair of 6-2 scores. Phil Exner went 1-1 in first position with a 6-2 win over Southeastern's top pair and a 7-6 loss to the then-ranked No. 11 doubles duo in the nation in Harding's Cas de Ruiter and Cian Mikkelsen.
Blanchar, now the 23rd-ranked singles player in the nation, carries an 18-7 record into the regular season finale against Washburn on Friday. He is 11-3 this spring in first position. He and Exner, the fifth-ranked doubles duo in the nation, are 19-8 this season, including an 11-6 record this spring in first position.
