STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Ouachita Baptist University men's tennis team opened the 2023 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association/Great American Conference Championship Tournament on Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Newman University.
The Tigers (12-9) will now take on Northwest Missouri State University on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the tournament semifinals. Wednesday's win over Newman was played at Oklahoma State University's indoor tennis facility due to high winds. The rest of the tournament is still scheduled to be played in Edmond.
In the win over Newman (10-10), the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins in first and third positions in doubles, including a convincing win for
Alex Blanchar and
Phil Exner at No. 1 and a tiebreaker win for
Ramon Strassmann and
Fernando Docters at No. 3.
Blanchar and Exner earned straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while
Aaron Osmond clinched the team victory with a straight-set win of his own in sixth position.
