LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – The 2023 induction class into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame includes two individuals with ties to Ouachita Baptist University.
Lennox Adams, a triple jumper for the Tigers in the late 1980s, as well as Robert (Red) Nelson, a letterman for the Tigers in the 1940s and long-time supporter and meet starter, are a part of the 2023 class that will be inducted on Friday, June 2 at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock at 6:30 p.m.
Adams won three consecutive AIC and NAIA Indoor triple jump championships in in 1987, 1988, and 1989. He was the NAIA outdoor triple jump champion in 1988 and finished second in 1989. He was a three-time All-America honoree, and competed in the 1988 Olympics representing St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The late Red Nelson earned 15 letters at Ouachita in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He had a brief coaching career after graduation before returning to Arkadelphia as a partner of Southwest Sporting Goods. He remained heavily involved in the sport as the state's top track starter for several decades, and was part of the group that attracted the NAIA national track & field championships to Henderson State University from 1973-77. He passed away in 2011, but his legacy lives on through the voice and writing of his son, Rex, who is one of the state's top historians and also the play-by-play radio voice for the Ouachita Tigers football team.
