TOPEKA, Kansas – Fernando Docters and
Ramon Strassmann swept through the ITA Regionals bracket this past weekend to win the doubles championship and qualify for next month's ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia.
The duo started with an 8-6 win over a team from Newman, followed by an 8-4 win over a team from UA-Fort Smith and an 8-5 win over a team from Washburn to set up a familiar matchup in the semifinals against teammates
Phil Exner and
Alex Blanchar.
Exner and Blanchar worked their way through their respective matchups in the bracket with a pair of 8-6 wins in the first two rounds and then an 8-5 win in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, it was Docters and Strassmann coming out on top by a score of 8-5.
In the finals, Docters and Strassmann took down Harding's Cas de Ruiter and Teodor Zlatar in a close match by a final score of 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4. With that win, the Tiger duo earned the regional doubles championship and an automatic bid to the ITA Cup, which will be held October 12-16 in Rome, Georgia.
Also in doubles this past weekend,
Moritz Buss and
Elias Lagger won the B doubles flight, going 4-0 with victories over teams from Augustana, Southeastern Oklahoma State, and Washburn in the first three rounds and then an 8-5 win over a team from Southern Arkansas in the finals.
Aaron Osmond and
Yosua Lumbanradja went 1-2 in their respective bracket.
In singles, Exner and Blanchar both advanced to the quarterfinals of the A flight, both finishing at 3-1. Strassmann went 3-1 in singles. Lagger went 2-1. Docters, Buss, and Lumbanradja each finished at 1-1. Osmond finished at 0-2.
