HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas – The Ouachita baseball team wrapped up its season-opening weekend with an 8-1 victory over No. 23 Missouri Southern on Sunday at Majestic Park.
The Tigers (3-0) used clutch pitching to keep the Lions (3-1) off the scoreboard. Other than a solo homerun in the seventh inning, the Tigers only allowed the Lions to get past second base on three different occasions.
Chase Oberle earned the win in his Tiger debut, giving up just one run on six hits with three strikeouts in the first 6.2 innings.
Cameron Marchant earned a 2.2 inning save, keeping the Lions scoreless on four hits in the final eight outs.
The Tiger offense scattered singles runs in each of the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings, and then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a pair of bases loaded walks and
Reece McWilliams' first Ouachita homerun.
Michael Quinones ended his productive weekend with a 3-for-5 hitting performance.
Dustin Bermudez,
G. Allen, and
Cole Bedwell all added two hits in the win.
Quinones, Allen, Bermudez, and Oberle were all named to the Dugan Collegiate Invitational All-Tournament Team. Quinones finished the weekend 6-for-13 at the plate with two doubles. Allen went 5-for-12 with two doubles, one homerun, and a .750 slugging percentage. Bermudez went 4-for-12 with four RBI, a double, and a homerun. Bermudez also earned a win and a save on the mound. Oberle's performance on Sunday was one of the best all weekend from a starting pitcher.
The Tigers will face off against Missouri Southern again next weekend, this time on the Lions' home turf in Joplin. The series is scheduled for single games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
