ARKADELPHIA – It took an extra four innings to determine which team had the upper hand of this weekend's Great American Conference series at Rab Rodgers Field between Ouachita and Arkansas-Monticello with the Weevils taking advantage of a Tiger fielding error in the top of the 13th inning to earn a 4-3 win.
The Weevils took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk, but Ouachita starter
Cooper Timmons worked out of the jam to limit the damage to just one run. The Weevils loaded the bases again in the second and fourth innings, both times with Timmons coming out on top with zeros on the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, the Tigers were held scoreless through the first five innings by Weevil starter Connor Irvine.
The Weevils scored two in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead before Ouachita broke up the shutout with an RBI single from
Tallon Heine in the bottom half of the inning.
More zeros followed in the seventh and eighth innings to set up a game-tying two-run homerun by Ouachita's
Kieran Theriot in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Relievers
Dustin Bermudez for Ouachita and Nelson Mercado for UAM threw all four of the extra innings. Bermudez allowed just one UAM hit to go along with eight strikeouts. Mercado ended up with three hits allowed and six strikeouts.
UAM broke the tie with what ended up being the game-winning run in the 13th on a dropped fly ball.
In addition to his four innings of relief, Bermudez also went 3-for-6 at the plate.
Collin Liles also had three hits in the game.
Michael Quinones and
Wesley Scott each had two hits.
Games two and three of the series will be played on Saturday starting at noon at Rab Rodgers Field.
