ARKADELPHIA — The Ouachita women's soccer team erupted with three second-half goals to rally past Southern Nazarene 3-1, earning their first Great American Conference win Wednesday at Kluck Field.
Southern Nazarene freshman Gabriella Ponce broke the deadlock and struck her first goal of the season from the top right corner of the box off a feed from midfielder Sam Smith to give the Crimson Storm a 1-0 lead before halftime.
Ouachita had a fierce response after the break, starting when junior Isabella Savattere sent a throw-in to senior Ava Dunagan, who passed it into the box for junior Reese Brown to score the right-footed equalizer in the 56th minute.
The Tigers (2-4-2, 1-0-1 GAC) continued pressing and took their first lead in the 78th minute as Brown hustled to keep the ball in-play near the left corner. Brown dribbled past her defender and delivered an assist inside the box past a diving goalkeeper to junior midfielder Madi Vana, who buried her second goal of the season uncontested.Â
Ouachita put the match away when sophomore Olivia Erskine and junior Savannah Meyers mastered the give-and-go. Erskine sent a lob to Meyers, who immediately found Erskine open at the top of the box to cap the scoring with a 20-yard strike for her team-leading third goal of the season in the 84th minute.Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Hapgood played all 90 minutes, anchored the Tigers with six saves and kept the Crimson Storm (2-6-1, 0-3-0 GAC) scoreless in the second half. Ouachita outshot Southern Nazarene 15-10 and collected six shots on goal.Â
The Tigers improved to 2-0-2Â at Kluck Field this season and continue GAC play on Saturday with a road match against Oklahoma Baptist.
