ARKADELPHIA – Ouachita sophomore shortstop
Wesley Scott hit a game-winning three-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Tigers to a 6-4 victory over Arkansas Tech at home on Sunday in the final game of the weekend series against the Wonder Boys.
Scott accounted for three of Ouachita's seven hits in the win, none bigger than the ninth-inning blast that nearly hit the tennis courts beyond the right field fence at Rab Rodgers Field. That capped a five-run rally for the Tigers in the inning and snap a nine-game win streak for the Wonder Boys. It was Scott's fourth long ball of the year.
The victory helps the Tigers avoid being swept in the series. Tech won a pair of two-run games on Saturday. Ouachita now sits at 14-17 overall and 11-10 in GAC games. Tech falls to 17-15 overall and 13-7 in GAC games.
Prior to Ouachita's ninth-inning rally, the Tigers had been held scoreless since the bottom of the first inning on a sac fly from
Gavin Jacobs. Tech started the scoring with one run in the top of the first, and added to that with single runs in the third, seventh, and eighth innings, respectively to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth.
Before Scott's game-ending homerun,
Isaac Nowell came through with a two-run single that crept through the right side of the infield to trim the deficit to one at 4-3.
Ouachita's pitching held the Wonder Boys to just six hits in the game.
Kyndall Cassidy (1-1) earned his first victory as a Tiger after facing the minimum in the top of the ninth and getting the help of a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Tigers are on the road next week, heading to Harding on Tuesday for a non-conference midweek matchup, and then to southeast Arkansas next weekend for a three-game GAC series against Arkansas-Monticello.
