JACKSON, Tennessee – The Ouachita softball team spilt its midweek doubleheader against the Bulldogs of Union University Tuesday afternoon.
Game One: Ouachita 3, Union 1
It was a slow start for Ouachita in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader as Union scored in the bottom of the opening frame to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers got things going in the fourth inning after
Baylee King recorded Ouachita's first hit of the game to lead off the frame. After two successful bunts, King was brought home thanks to an RBI groundout from
Remington Adams, tying the game at 1-1.
Both defenses held strong for the next three innings, with Ouachita holding the Bulldogs hitless over the next five innings of action and both teams going scoreless through the end of regulation, sending the game to extra innings.
It wasn't until the top of the ninth inning that Ouachita got things going again.
Jordyn Merrett was placed on second to start the inning due to the international tiebreaker rule.
Emily Reed delivered for the Tigers with a one-out, two-run home run to left center, putting the Tigers on top 3-1. The Ouachita defense dug in its heels in the bottom of the ninth to work out of a jam and secure the 3-1 victory in game one.
Adams and King each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the win. Reed went 1-for-3 with two RBI and her eighth home run of the season.
Catie Amador started in the circle and threw five strikeouts and allowed just one run over 8.2 innings of work to earn the win.
Kodee Batchelor pitched the final two outs to earn her sixth save of the season.
Game Two: Union 2, Ouachita 0
Union struck early again in game two, this time for two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ouachita got runners on base on more than one occasion but left them stranded. The Tigers fell in the second game of the day by the final score of 2-0.
Karley Burrow gave up just one earned run and struck out two in 6.0 innings of work in the loss.
This was the first of two midweek doubleheaders for Ouachita this week. The Tigers will be taking on the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2 in Cleveland, Mississippi. The games have been moved up two hours from their originally scheduled time and will now be played at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
