BENTON, Arkansas – The Ouachita baseball team won both ends of a Sunday double header in Benton against Arkansas-Monticello for the squad's fifth Great American Conference series victory of the season.
Final scores were 4-1 and 3-1 in favor of the Tigers (16-18, 13-10 GAC) on Sunday. The series finale is set for Monday in Monticello at 3 p.m.
Game one featured a pitcher's dual between Ouachita's Chase Oberle and UAM's Connor Irvine. Oberle went 7.2 scoreless innings in his no-decision, giving up only three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Irvine went seven innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Luke House (5-4) came on in relief for the first time of the season and finished the game for his fifth win of the season.
UAM (21-15, 14-9 GAC) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extra baseball. In the top of the 10th, the Tigers loaded the bases to set up Cade Bowman with what appeared to be a grand slam to left field, only to be reverted to a three-run single after he was called out passing one of his Tiger teammates running near first base.
In game two, the scheduled seven-inning contest of the series, UAM struck first on a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning. Ouachita took the lead with a three-run fourth inning, including a two-run single by Jaxson Jester and an RBI from Bowman.
After earning the win in game one, Luke House was called again to start game two. The senior turned in another good outing in a no-decision, giving up just one run on three hits in the first three innings. Tag Pacot (4-3) came on in relief in the fourth and kept the Weevils scoreless on just one hit in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Kyzer Smith picked up his first career save by shutting the door in the bottom of the seventh.
